I just read: Queen of Shadows | Throne of Glass 4 | Sarah J Maas | 5/5

Blurb

The queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

My Thoughts

For me, this was a great read which got better and better. I understand some of the low reviews, why some people aren’t happy with the way characters were treated – but honestly, I still loved it! This world is really coming to life now and the stories weaving within are incredible. I think some of my favourite chapters were those concerning Manon and her Thirteen.  And, well now – I liked Dorian, and I liked Chaol a little more,  but they didn’t quite ‘do it’ for me in any major way. But Rowan? Mmhmm…  Consider me done. I’m in awe of the worlds and characters that Sarah J Maas creates. Bring on the next… 🙂

Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak―but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life―and her future―forever. Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?

The bestselling series that has captured readers all over the world reaches new heights in this sequel to the New York Times best-selling Crown of Midnight. Packed with heart-pounding action, fierce new characters, and swoon-worthy romance, this third book will enthrall readers from start to finish.

My Thoughts

Well, Sarah J. Mass is firmly rooting herself as one of my favourite authors! Once again I found myself engrossed in Celaena’s story, intrigued by this world of magic and war, and frequently pausing to ponder the greatness of aspects in the storytelling. Admittedly, as with book two, I found it a little slow at times, but it really kicked off in the second half and has again left me eager for more.

“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

My Thoughts

“The killing calm…  Even he had never realised just how calm she could get when she went over the edge. If they wanted Adarlan’s Assassin, they’d get her. And Wyrd help them when she arrived.”

Ooh, Celaena’s journey continues, and it’s goooood! I found this book a little slow to get going, but once it did, I couldn’t put it down. Loving the developing relationships and revelations… High hopes for book three!

“Nothing is a coincidence. Everything has a purpose. You were meant to come to this castle, just as you were meant to be an assassin.”

When magic has gone from the world, and a vicious king rules from his throne of glass, an assassin comes to the castle. She does not come to kill, but to win her freedom. If she can defeat twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition to find the greatest assassin in the land, she will become the King’s Champion and be released from prison.

Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her.

And a princess from a foreign land will become the one thing Celaena never thought she’d have again: a friend.

But something evil dwells in the castle—and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying, horribly, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival—and a desperate quest to root out the source of the evil before it destroys her world.

My Thoughts

I can’t believe it took me this long to read Throne of Glass. I think I was scared to start because the series is huge,  and because I loved ACOTAR so much that I worried this would pale in comparison.

I needn’t have worried. It was awesome! At the moment I do still prefer Rhys and the land of Prythian,  BUT I have a feeling this series is going to get better and better, and I can’t wait to see what comes next. Celaena and Chaol,  Celaena and Dorian?! Gah! I love their developing relationships! And whose asses is she going to kick?!

My Thoughts

So in love with this series! A gripping tale of love, magic, villains, action… wonderful characters set amongst an original and intriguing world. Once again I find myself sad to leave a fantasy world that has consumed me,  but the ending was so perfect and satisfying that I can’t complain! Looking forward to more VE Schwab books now…

I just read: Ruin and Rising | Grisha Trilogy 3 | Leigh Bardugo | 5/5

The final installment in the Grisha trilogy turned out to be a very satisfying read. The Darkling really makes this series. There’s still a part of me that wishes his story had gone a different way,  but it’s given me a lot to think about on writing villains and their relationships. The story was peppered with wit and humour (largely thanks to Nikolai),  with a good twist and a great ending that gave me all the feels! I’m a bit sad to leave this world…

Review: Shadow and Bone | Grisha Trilogy 1 | Leigh Bardugo | 4/5

A quick and enjoyable fantasy read. I really liked this book. Alina isn’t an instant heroine and has to work hard to find her place. Good characters and development. The Darkling steals the show.. Seductive and dangerous… Keeps us rethinking what he’s really all about. I’m excited to read book two…

Review: Rise of the Sparrows | Sarina Langer | 4/5

Had me hooked from the brilliant prologue! Rachel is an understated heroine,  but she’s not to be messed with!

I’d have liked to have seen more of a developing relationship between her and the other characters,  and I do feel there was a little too much telling rather than showing. More could have been made of the ending too,  which wrapped up a little easily…BUT the epilogue hooked me back in! This is a very promising start to a new series,  I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. If you want magic, prophecy and people at war, then give this a go!
